Blissfully Ignorant

In the morning, I often see two people walking from a place to other, almost in the same time, from my balcony. Both of them do the same activity at the same time as a ritual. Since both are adults, they must be doing this act as a choice after a decision-making process. But do they enjoy this act at the same level? Does it mean the same thing for both of them? To find the answer to these questions, let me give you some more description about the profiles of each of these. One of them is a wealthy lady, ‘Ms. Debit’ who does this ritual as ‘morning walk’. She is doing it as an exercise to keep in fit shape. Moreover, she prefers to enjoy the fresh air & open environment before beginning her busy daily routine. The other person is a factory worker, ‘Mr. Credit’. He has to walk the same path, as he cannot afford to pay for the taxi fare to his office from his merger earning. He is the only earning member in his family having six members. Now try to answer the questions asked. Does the act of walking the same distance at the same time means same to both of them? The air, the temperature, the road and everything around is same at any given time for both of these people. But they feel it differently. In fact, it means opposite to them. What is making the difference here is their financial status. While the wealthy lady is enjoying the act due to her financial freedom, the factory labor is doing it in compulsion to earn his bread & support his family. The lady can stop or terminate her walk anytime & call her car to go to somewhere else, but the laborer does not have such luxury. In fact, it is not in finical level, but in all other aspects, most of us live our lives like that. Very few have the luxury like the lady and most people do their ritual out of compulsions as the laborer. Our freedom is restricted by our mental compulsions. Most of these stems from the commitments already taken at some point of time in our lives and our hesitation to come out of it. But most dangerous compulsions are our default actions which are the result of our habit patterns formed by repeatedly doing some actions / rituals. In todays, system / machines driven lives, most of our actions are performed by default and we fly on ‘auto piolet mode’. ‘No decision’ or inability / compulsion to ‘carry on same way’ is also a decision. This way, we become slaves to our habits which are the actions performed through our unconscious mind and we are not even aware of these. If we are struck in such a situation, ‘moving fast to get some free time’ can help up to a point only. In fact, compelling your body to move faster than its capabilities, you may harm your health. Knowing your limitations and moving with your optimum speed is the solution in such a case. The optimum speed is ‘not too fast / not too slow & it lets you enjoy the process of move. How do we know our optimum speed? The answer is ‘listen to your body’. Your body gives you the signals of fatigue & our mind (commonsense) tell us when to stop speeding. But alas, with ‘fast moving lifestyle in the complexities of modern life’, we tend to ignore the signals emerging from our mind / body. We are blissfully ignorant about the free advice from our best fried (our body / mind). Those who understand it, live an ‘awakened life’ and enjoy every movement of it.

#Replace Lockdown with ‘Self Imposed Discipline’ (SID)

The corona pandemic has suddenly increased our vocabulary with new terms like ‘COVID 19’, ‘PPE’, ‘Social distancing’ etc. One such term is ‘lock-down’.

Propagated through western media, this term was coined by busyness mind-set of people for an action taken to stop or cut down all non-essential activities & movements. In business world, putting a lock or stop on production activity causing the downtrend of production is known as lock down and often used by labor unions to show off their powers.

But we Indians have a different mindset /prospective towards life & doing business. We always take a disciplined approach for our activities. If we become careless in this regard, an external agency like Government, Family, Society or Employer forces us to ‘keep in order’. ‘Brahmchary(a) or self-discipline is one of the five basic principles of yog(a). Our concept of health is ‘swasthy (स्वास्थ्य) meaning situated within self (स्वयं में स्तिथ हो जाना) in contrast to the ‘absence of any disease’ definition of western world. And food itself is the medicine according to Ayurved(a).

In our context, it will be mindful to replace the term Lock down with ‘Self Imposed Discipline’ which will be meaningful & motivating.

I appeal the Government of India to consider this suggestion for use of this new world in all communications. Please join me in this effort.

The game changer

Undoubtedly, mankind will survive corona pandemic also, as it has done several times in past (after paying a prize each time, of course). There are generally ‘Food for thoughts’ & ‘lessons to be learnt’ analysis after each calamity.

But today's technology enabled global village, we can preempt this exercise of analysis as enough data is available. No, it’s not a waste of time , as most of us have plenty of time at our disposal now. Rather than worrying unnecessarily, we can focus our mind for this exercise. I have done such and effort and sharing it in this article.

Our lives before and after the corona episode will never be the same again. Nor the way, we conduct business or pleasure. Here are some highlights-

self-imposed discipline

Most of us have been taking our freedom for granted. By ‘discipline’, we generally meant something being practice by army or uniformed forces not by ordinary citizen. We tend to neglect the basic rules and become sincere only by application with force. This approach will change now. The ‘self imposed discipline’ will be the mantra for survival for the new generation.

Dealing with invisible entities

With corona, we will be learnt to deal effectively with invisible, intangible entities. Corona is a nano meter sized virus, a dead entity of protein particles which can survive in human body with the help of living cells. We cannot see or touch it, yet it is a bitter reality of modern age. If we ignore it, it may cost us our lives and the lives of others also. There are many intangible entities in our lives which were being neglected just because invisible to our eyes. We will learn to handle such entities more effectively be it electromagnetic radiations, our feelings or wireless communication and chemical reactions.

Need analysis

Technological advancements, massive built up of infrastructure, liberal framework of law, converting tourism/travel/healthcare as big industries and aggressive marketing of every product had resulted in making people across the globe to go on mad purchase /travel spree. The time-tested wisdom of need analysis before any acquisition or movement was forgotten. Now, this will come into foreground from background because people have started feeling the difference between their basic & cosmetics needs.

Crowd based business

Crowded places were the natural choice for marketing & sale for products and accordingly business contracts were written based on footfalls. But that business rules/algorithms will have to be rewritten. Because people have learnt to maintain a physical distance /space between each other and they will let go the monetary benefits to maintain a personal space around them. Travel will be business class heavy, business meetings will be mostly ‘on line’ rather physical and places of worship & tourism will be designed accordingly (not to pack them on confined space but maintain their space).

Local Vs Global business

Distributed business setup to meet the local demands will be the first priority over centralized export-based business establishments. Byers will also prefer locally made products over imported products. Headquarters will become thin in terms of people and heavy in terms of data.

Public distribution

The public distribution system will improve to become more transparent and prompter. Governments will have to work overtime to maintain updated records of people and their demand. The calculations will be based on mathematical models and data mining of  demand patterns.

Place of work

Work from home will be the default norms of most of the business. People will prefer less commuting time for place of work even with lesser salary package. Self-sustained residential complexes with integrated basic amenities including farming and annexed ‘office set up’ will be designed. Cities will be made self-contained to sustain long periods of isolation.

Warfare
Traditional weapons will become obsolete very soon. We have already entered the age of chemical. Biological & electronic warfare. New weapons of mass destruction and psychological war will emerge. The stage is setup for third world war.

Living consciously

We live by defaults. Our mind works on program or logical script which is executed dynamically with the available input values provided to it. In the eventuality of we failing to supply the input parameters, our mind takes the predefined defaults values as input values. This way we can put the mind to autopilot mode and relax. It is a convenient and economical way of doing things.
These default values are developed through our habit patterns which may have roots in our culture, environment around us, governing rules of the law, accepted practices of doing the things in the society, our whims or inclinations/preferences.
But the problem is that gradually we become slave to our habits. We give a ‘power of attorney’ to our mind and slip into unconscious and isolated state. The changes around us are still happening but these are being download in background. The foreground is busy in playing the past recording or speculating the future event.

Living consciously is difficult. It is dealing with uncertainties of life on real time basis. It is like taking risks and becoming entrepreneur. This is beautifully explained by Ekhart in his best seller book, ‘The power of now’.

All spiritual communication or process of meditation are designed to take us to this state. But these are mere indicator. You can lead the horse to water but the horse has to drink it. Similarly, your spiritual guru can indicate you the way to NIRVANA but s(he) cannot live your life. you have to do so.

Just wait & watch

Thousands of years ago, when the civilization was in primitive stage and hunting was our only occupation, the confusing question in the mind of everyone at the time of seeing a wild animal was, ‘Is this a source of protein a food for me? or will this creature will eat me as a food for its nourishment?  This difficult and confusing question demanded to be answered in split seconds to survive and evolve.
Gradually, we learnt the capabilities of animals and treated each one of them accordingly. Hen, goat, buffaloes etc were tamed and allowed to grow to serve as food apart from the plant-based grains, fruits and vegetables etc. The dangerous animals like tiger and elephants etc were forced to eliminate and restricted to thick jungles away from civilization. These animals are so rare that the next generation will perhaps see these movies only.
From there our journey of evolution have been impressive. We have built super computers, atom bomb and robots. But now, suddenly an invisible animal of nanometers size (corona virus) have come to destroy the mankind and growing rapidly using human body as a host.
It has restricted our move within our houses. This isolation has deprived us from socializing and hugging each other. It has also deprived us of using the facilities created by us for rapid movement.
But we have to use some food item to survive. Bur now a days when we see a food item, the same old question hounds us. ‘will this source of protein nourish our body?’ or ‘Does this item contains invisible corona virus with protein which will become the cause of our death?’
We are a smart race. It is a matter of time, when we will be able to solve this problem also and tame this animal.
How much time?
Just wait & watch.

The Corona effect

The present time is very special and we are in a very crucial phase of our history. We are fighting World War 3 now. It has already taken more than eleven thousand lives. But this time, it is different from previous world wars on many accounts.

Firstly, the entire globe is involved. There is no choice left to any country which it can exercise about going to war or not. You have to fight for the survival of your people.

Secondly, we are fighting an invisible enemy. The enemy, a tiny virus, not visible by, eye can be anywhere, deceiving us, hiding inside the sinus cavity of some ordinary person engaged in his/her routine activities like commuting to the office/place of business or education, purchasing grocery, clothes or gadgets, travelling etc.

Thirdly, although the enemy is not very lethal, it is new and no vaccine is available for it as of now. So, even if it is detected, the treatment is doubtful.

Fourthly, it is contagious and spreads very fast. The speed of its spread is really very fast, perhaps beyond our imagination. Touching a  door knob of a lift or cab or bus or train , the screen of your mobile, the fruit/vegetable or grocery  you purchased from a departmental store or opening a package received through a courier are enough for the virus to go inside your sinus cavity and then making you a virus factory producing and spreading the virus everywhere.

Fifthly, this unique war is being fought by all the nations of the globe at one side and virus on the other side. The entire human race is in danger. We have temporarily forgotten our differences and become a team. This team has got China/ Russia & America, India & Pakistan, Iran & Iraq, Israel & Palestine at equal ground not opposite each other.

East & west, right & left, husband & wife, boss & subordinate, client and business person are not business rival now, they are one team. This is the state of yog(a)- the best possible state possible where the flow is through neutral sushumna nadi in place of ida & pingala (positive & negative).

But this is the state of death also. the enemy is smart and killed many of our most vulnerable assets- ‘the old people with medical conditions’.

Is the sacrifice made by old generation is enough or enemy will be able to claim substantial young & healthy lives too? How long will this war last?

Whosoever will survive this war, will be a part of new generation with stronger immune system and smarter ways of living life and doing business. After all we learn from our mistakes.
